Why study the history of the Church?
-
The church is the body of Christ. As members of the body, what it has been doing for the past centuries is of great interest.
-
It helps us not to repeat the mistakes of the past. “Those who do not know history are forever condemned to repeat it”
-
We get from it the encouragement from our brothers and sisters who lived in the most dangerous times of all history and were able to keep their faith even when it cost them their lives.
-
We become aware of the power of evil that has been constantly fighting the church of the Lord, attempting in all possible ways to destroy it from both within and without.
-
We by it understand the origin of the many Christian denominations and what makes the church to look like it does today.
-
It makes us understand the origins of sects, apostasies and heresies haunting the church even today, and how the church handled conflict and division.
Only then can we be able to comprehend what the Lords purpose for the church has been from the start and what He is doing to uphold it.
CHURCH HISTORY
COUNSELLING is a very critical matter.
This is so because people nowadays do not live a normal life. There is untold suffering and misery in both the christian and the non-christian communities. Divorces, child abuse, marital problems, suicides, abuse of drugs. Alcoholism, abortions and unwanted pregnancies, to mention but just a few are the order of the day.
JESUS CHRIST is the centre of all true christian counselling. Any type of counselling that moves Christ from His position of centrality ceases to be christian counselling. Christian Counselling is a basic process of applying God's word to our daily problems. It has the advantage of being able to diagnose specific personal needs, thereby applying God's word as the treatment. The task of a christian counsellor is to lead man to a living contact with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. We know of Christ and His will through His word
COUNSELLING
The study of the character of God must be approached with humility and reverence. Who can define the nature and essence of the Infinite God? Not only are His ways "past finding out" (Rom. 11:33). His nature and being surpass our comprehension. However God has revealed as much of His essential nature to us as is needed to serve and worship Him. It is especially important to understand the character or nature of God, as it is revealed in the Bible, for many different concepts of deity are held by those who reject the God of the Scriptures. The Bible does not give us a single comprehensive definition of God. If the heaven of heavens cannot contain Him (1 Kings 8:27) how can a sentence or paragraph of human words define His being?
CHARACTER OF GOD
As we consider serving God, it will be to no avail unless we pray. One writer wrote, "The one concern of the devil is to keep christians from praying. He fears nothing from prayerless studies, prayerless work, prayerless religion. He laughs at our toil, mocks at our wisdom, but trebles when we pray."
TALKING WITH GOD
PNEUMATOLOGY 1 ( THE HOLY SPIRIT)
Holy Spirit in the Beginning
The Holy Spirit in relation to the world in general with regard to the material universe is an Agent in Creation. Each person in the Godhead is represented as having created all things.
-
The Father - God,...hath in these last days spoken unto us by His Son...by whom also He made the worlds. (Heb. 1:12)
-
The Son - " all things were made by Him and without Him was not anything made that was made, " (Jn. 1:3), (Col. 1:16).
-
The Holy Spirit - "Thou sendest forth thy Spirit, they are created and thou renewest the face of the earth," (Ps. 104:30) (Job 33:4)
For many years stories about Jesus were passed on by word of mouth. When a story is repeated again and again, it becomes shorter. Proper names drop out, numbers are confused, but the point of the story is preserved and emphasised. This is why the first three gospels are largely made up of short anecdotes about Jesus, often leading up to an act of power or some great saying. These anecdotes are not arranged in any special order.
As the Apostles and other eye-witnesses died or were martyred, it was seen to be important to write down a true record of Jesus' acts and teachings so as to prevent falsehood from creeping in. This movement began in the sixties of the first century and Luke 1:1 tells us that many such gospel books were compiled. The church finally selected the four gospels as containing full, reliable information about Jesus. The first three gospels are called "Synoptic" because treating the same material and using similar styles, they can profitably be compared with one another. John's gospel is very different from the other three. He sees Christ as from the "Beginning".
LIFE & TEACHINGS OF CHRIST
The teaching of the Kingdom of God is important for us because it involves the total message of the Bible. The Gospels
reveal that the Kingdom of God was the central theme of Jesus' ministry.
Mark 1:14- Mat. 4:17 Luke 4:42-43
"Kingdom of God/Heaven" occurs 85 times in the gospels. 160 times in NT. Matthew's gospel uses the term "Kingdom of Heaven" (32 times), while Mark and Luke use "Kingdom of God".
Luke 6:20 Mat. 5:3
THE KINGDOM OF GOD
PNEUMATOLOGY 2 (GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT)
This course will lead the student to a personal acquaintance with the Spiritual Gifts in depth.
Firstly, how to personally apply and experience the gifts and how to help others to apply and experience the gifts.
